The laser is especially suited to intricate detailed or contoured panels where it can be difficult to strip around shapes, corners and recessed areas.

What are the limitations of laser stripping timber?

Please note - unfortunately the laser does not work on all materials and coatings.

  • White paint reflects the laser light and reduces it's effectiveness. In most cases it is faster and more economical to strip white furniture or doors using a heat gun or chemical strippers. Darker colours are more effectively removed.

  • Thick paint or multiple layers of paint are also problematic as the power required to remove these will often start to burn the timber, leaving scorch marks and discolouration of the wood.

  • Rimu timber with clear varnish commonly found in NZ character homes is particularly susceptible to overheating compared to other wood types, and leaves small burn marks in the grain lines. Rimu coated with darker stains can be stripped, but the result is dependant on the type of stain used.

  • Laser stripping is not suitable for external cladding, roofing or large areas of flooring.
